On Thursday, Sudan's army vowed a "harsh response" to an attack carried out by the Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on a village the previous day. According to pro-democracy activists, the assault resulted in over 100 deaths.
This incident marks the most significant in a series of RSF attacks on small villages throughout the agricultural region since they seized control of Wad Madani, the capital, in December.
Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan issued this statement following allegations from local activists that the army failed to respond to urgent calls for assistance during Wednesday's attack.
The army has not responded to requests for comment on the matter.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack in the strongest terms, as reported by UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.
